Megan Guarnier wins first stage Emakumeen Bira
Sweet victory for the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team in the Emakumeen Bira today. Megan Guarnier outsprinted three opponents in Arrasate after a tough stage. In general classification the American champion moved up to the fourth place. Guarnier and Johansson were able to bridge to two leaders on the long and tough climb on 35 kilometres from the finish line. The group in the front contained six riders for a little while, but in the final only Guarnier, Johansson, Moolman and Niewiadoma remained in the lead. All energy seemed wasted at the moment the four were send in the wrong direction, but the race organisation neutralized the stage. In that way the four leaders were able to sprint for the victory in Arrasate. It was a close call on the finish line, but Guarnier won according to the photo finish. Demi de Jong remains in the lead of the youth classification. Guarnier reacted: "The group rolled pretty well until the final 1,5 kilometres, then it started to slow up. I knew the final 300 metres was narrow and a bit technical with the dremples so I took the initiative in the sprint." That worked out just fine.
Newly-crowned American national road champion Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) continued her successful season by winning the first road stage of Euskal Emakumeen Bira on Thursday. It is the American’s third victory of the year and the 12th for her Dutch-registered team.“I’m a very consistent rider,” Guarnier told Ella CyclingTips. “My whole career, I have been consistent. I’m just higher up in the results consistently this year. I’ve had some really nice results, and that’s part of how Boels-Dolmans works. Everyone gets an opportunity, and you need to take those opportunities.”“It’s also years of growing,” she added. “It’s learning the races, learning the riders and learning my abilities. It’s all starting to pay off for me.”Guarnier outsprinted former Bira champion Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) and Ashleigh Moolman (Bigla) to the line, but it was Rabo-Liv’s Kasia Niewiadoma who pulled on the race leader’s jersey thanks to her ride in the prologue on Wednesday night.
“It was a bit of a technical sprint,” said Guarnier, who was the first of the four to make a real push toward the line. “There was a lot of road furniture.”The stage was not without a bit of drama and controversy. A four-women breakaway of Guarnier, Moolman, Johansson and Niewiadoma had taken shape over the day’s largest climb to Kurtzeta, and as the four leaders attacked their way into town, they were taken off course by the motorbike.“Well, it was funny because we tried to look at the finish before the race, and we couldn’t work it out,” explained Guarnier. “I heard other teams had the same difficulty in trying to preview the finish. I guess the difficulties were legitimate because even the race [officials] didn’t know the direction of the race.”Guarnier and company were taken to a dead-end, and then the motorbike became turned around as it attempted to bring the race leaders back onto the course.“They were bringing us back to the course when we saw the whole peloton roll by,” Guarnier explained. “My heart kind of sank. I was like: ‘All that work….’”Race officials decided to neutralise the stage and re-started the leaders with the 1:20 advantage they had over the bunch at the time they were led off course.“When we rode into the wrong direction, I was afraid all our effort had been for nothing,” said Niewiadoma in her team’s race report. “It was fantastic that the organizers neutralised the race and gave us our lead back.”Prior to the chaotic finish, the the first hour of racing had been relatively quiet, with no break attempts reported before the major climb. Having won the prologue, Annemiek van Vleuten (Bigla) began the stage in yellow, and her Bigla team assumed responsibility for the pace-making heading into the eight kilometre climb.“It was basically sit-in and wait for the climb today,” noted Guarnier. “None of the big teams were making any moves because everyone was waiting. There were some people going for the intermediate sprints, but other than that, there was no real action.”On the climb, the peloton shattered. The leading group of 20 became a seven-rider front group. Then five. Then two. Niewiadoma and Moolman led over the summit with a gap to Guarnier and Johnasson. Anna Sanchis (Wiggle Honda) and Tetyana Riabchenko (Inpa Sottoli Giusfredi) chased the duo just ahead.“Moolman and Kasia went about a kilometre to go,” said Guarnier. “I was pretty well tried, but I know after that climb that it was a bit rolling, so I didn’t panic so much. Emma was really driving it over the top, and we made it back to Moolman and Kasia.”“We weren’t really working well together at all,” Guarnier added. “We all had teammates behind us who were general classification contenders or it wasn’t looking good for that mix of riders.”Sanchis and Riabchenko eventually bridged the distance to the leading quartet, which led to further disorganisation amongst the leaders.“They started attacking us, which made us even less disorganised,” Guarnier said. “Somehow the gap kept going up. Eventually it got to over a minute, and we had the cars come. We started working in a more pull-for-pull way after that.”Before reaching the bottom of the descent, Sanchis and Riabchenko would lose contact and Johansson would put in a small attack. A front group of four reached the flat run-in to town – at which point they were led off course.Guarnier won the four-up sprint, and Riabchenko and Sanchis coming to the line 20 seconds later. Lucinda Brand (Rabo-Liv) brought home a chase group of eight at 1:37.

Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) beat out Annemiek van Vleuten (Bigla) by the narrowest of margins on Friday to win stage two of Euskal Emakumeen Bira. Initial reports named van Vleuten the winner. The Dutchwoman had thrown her hands up across the line in celebration. A photo finish later declared Johansson the winner.“It could have gone either way,” said Johansson, in a statement. “I was coming with a lot of speed, and I saw that Annemiek let go of her handlebars, so I thought that might be the thing to put it in my favour.”
“She didn’t know I was coming,” Johansson added. “I feel a little bit sorry for taking it away from her, but after losing by so little yesterday, I sort of feel like I deserved a win today.”Johansson’s referencing the stage one photo finish on Thursday in which neither Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) nor Johansson knew who had won the stage until they had looked at finish line photos. Guarnier pipped Johansson by milimetres to take the stage win, and Johansson settled for second.As for van Vleuten, the 32-year-old was understandably disappointed that her early celebration cost her the stage win.“When I came back [to the front group] I attacked right away,” van Vleuten said in a statement. She had joined the little group with two kilometres left to race. “At first I was alone, and I gave everything — maximum. Then Katrin Garfoot from Orica-AIS came with me in the last kilometre, and I sprinted with 250 metres to go.”“It was confusing where I needed to go,” van Vleuten added. “In the last 100 metre there was a corner to the right, and I think I lost some time there.”“They came close but I didn’t feel them coming,” she continued. “I looked on my left shoulder, and I didn’t see Garfoot anywhere and that’s why I wanted to celebrate, but it was too early because then Johannson came on the right and jumped. I’ve never made a mistake like this before and it cost me the victory. “Johansson and van Vleuten were sprinting from an eight-rider leading group that took shape over the hilly run-in to the stage finish in Fruiz.“There was a climb that peaked with about eight kilometres to go and at the top of that there was still quite a big group,” Johansson explained. “After it, there was another smaller hill, about 1.5km and a lot steeper than the bigger climb. We came away with five riders before three more joined us before the finish.”Unlike stage one, stage two was an animated affair for the majority of the 82.2km day. Featuring two ascents of a category three climb separated by lumpy roads, Friday’s stage was a constant exercise in ups and downs and twists and turns.
A nine-rider escape slipped away from the peloton following the first ascent of the category three climb, and from there, attacks were aplenty. Bigla, Boels-Dolmans, Lotto Soudal Ladies, Orica-AIS and Rabo Liv were all involved in the aggressive action.Van Vleuten and Garfoot had a slight gap on Johansson coming out of the last turn before the finish line.“As I came around the last corner with 100 metres to go, Kat was up the road together with Annemiek, and it was so close,” Johansson said. “I didn’t want to take it away from Kat if she had the chance to go for it but once I saw that she was behind, I hit it as hard as I could and just made it.”It is Johansson’s second win in Basque Country, following her victory at the one-day Emakumeen Saria, a warm-up to the five day tour.Garfoot rounded out the podium in Fruiz while race leader Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) slotted into fourth place on the stage, on the same time as Johansson, to stay in yellow. The young Polish rider remains tied on time with Ashleigh Moolman-Paiso (Bigla), and the duo are two seconds ahead on Johansson on the overall.
Racing continues on Saturday with a 122km stage from Iuretta to Iturmendi. Stage three takes the peloton into Urkiola National Park for the day’s longest climb, an 11km climb with an average gradient of 4.3 percent.

Chantal Blaak snelt naar ritzege in Emakumeen Bira
Iturmendi (Sp.)- Chantal Blaak heeft de derde etappe in de etappekoers Euskal Emakumeen Bira (UCI 2.1) gewonnen. De Zuidlandse uit de sterke profformatie van Boels-Dolmans behoorde in de 112 kilometer lange rit van Iurreta naar Iturmendi door de Baskische provincie Navarra samen met de Italiaanse Elena Cecchini (Lotto Soudal) en de Australische Katrin Garfoot (Orica-AIS) tot een achtervolgende groep op twee vroege vluchters. Het drietal vloog er tijdens de laatste klim op en erover. Chantal Blaak maakte zich met een ferme demarrage vervolgens los van haar twee metgezellen en soleerde (na de zege in de Belgische klassieker Le Samyn eerder dit jaar) naar haar tweede seizoenzege. Cecchini finishte als tweede en Garfoot passeerde de streep als derde. Chantal Blaak bezet in het algemeen klassement achter onder andere klassementsleidster Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabobank-Liv) de achtste plaats. 'Dat had ik vanmorgen niet kunnen denken', liet de inwoonster van Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel weten. 'Er zat een flinke klim in en daarop had ik moeite om te volgen. We waren met vier van de ploeg vooruit, dus besloten we om beurten aan te vallen. Ik reed met Garfoot en Cecchini naar twee vroege vluchters toe, die we achter ons lieten. Toen ik samen met mijn vluchtmakkers boven was, wist ik dat ik een goede kans had om te winnen. Ik ben heel blij met deze overwinning, op dit parcours en in dit veld winnen, dat telt.'

Emma Johansson wins final stage of Euskal Emakumeen Bira; Kasia Niewiadoma secures overall victory
Emma Johansson won the fourth and final stage of Euskal Emakumeen Bira on Sunday. The Swedish national road and time trial champion proved quickest from a five-rider move that escaped from a reduced peloton over the final climb of the Basque tour. The stage win in Markina on Sunday is the third victory for Johansson in Basque Country in the last six days. She won the one day Emakumeen Saria in Durango on Tuesday andthe second stage of the tour. Having had a winless spring, the results come as a come as a welcome relief and confirm that Johansson is back to her best.“It’s really nice after a hard spring to come here for six days of racing and come home with three victories,” said Johansson in a team statement. “I gave it a crack today, I knew I needed to make a gap to be able to take the general classification but Niewiadoma has been glued to my wheel all week. To have the team riding so strong is really nice too and it’s always special for me to race here as well.”Race leader Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabo Liv) finished in second place on the stage and celebrated her overall win on the line.
“The entire team rode for me,” said Niewiadoma in a team statement. “Lucinda [Brand] and Jeanne [Korevaar] gave everything. Anna [van der Breggen] was great today. It’s wonderful for such a strong rider to give her full commitment to me. Shara Gillow was in the breakaway on Saturday. It doesn’t often happen, but [sport director] Koos [Moerenhout] asked her to wait for me because the difference was too big, and Shara dropped back diligently. I found it admirable. I hope I can do something quickly to repay them.”The women’s peloton set off from Markina for the 86.8km stage at a quick clip. Although Niewiadoma started the day in yellow, she was tied on time with Bigla’s Ashleigh Moolman-Paiso. Johansson, third overall, sat only two seconds behind the pair. The small gaps at the top of the general classification would prove for an exciting battle on the Basque roads.Lucinda Brand (Rabo Liv) launched an early attack and gained an advantage over the peloton along the coast. Brand maintained her lead through the first sprint point and returned to the peloton before the first of three categorized climbs.The peloton climbed steadily. The pace was high enough to shed riders off the back and discourage attacks from the front. A reduced bunch crested the climb and slithered down the descent in a single-file line.Thirty six kilometres from the finish, the attacks began in earnest. Brand was once again up the road. This time she had Demi de Jong (Boels-Dolmans), Carlee Tayler (Lotto Soudal Ladies), Amanda Spratt (Orica-AIS), Doris Schweizer (Bigla), Davia Tuslaite (Inpa Sottoli Giusfredi) and Irene Bitto (Top Girls Fasso Bortolo) for company. The six-rider breakaway gained a maximum advantage of only 30 seconds. The peloton reeled in the group on the run-in to the final climb.Annemiek van Vleuten (Bigla) countered the catch, and although she was unable to stay away, her attempt inspired a swift reaction. The peloton attacked its away up the final climb. Eventually Niewiadoma, Johansson, Guarnier, Moolman Anna van der Breggen (Rabo Liv) and Evie Stevens (Boels-Dolmans) broke clear.Niewiadoma twice attacked the six-rider group on the ascent. Her efforts dislodged van der Breggen and Stevens. Van der Breggen managed to rejoin the front group before the finish, and the group of five contested the stage win.

Jolien D'Hoore (Wiggle Honda) heeft de Diamond Tour, met start aan het MAS in Antwerpen en aankomst na 124,1 kilometer in Nijlen, gewonnen. De Belgische kampioene was na een massasprint sneller dan haar landgenote Kelly Druyts en de Duitse Lisa Brennauer. De eerste aanvalster van de dag was Germaine Post. De Nederlandse versnelde na zowat twintig kilometer wedstrijd uit het peloton. Haar poging werd echter snel tenietgedaan. Ook Judith Bloem en Eva Buurman probeerden een uitval op te zetten, maar ook hun pogingen werden in de kiem gesmoord. Het sein dan voor Isabelle Beckers om samen met Mary Rose Postma te gaan versnellen, maar ook deze aanval was geen lang leven beschoren. Vervolgens bleef het zeer onrustig in het peloton. Audrey Cordon, Elise Delzenne, Willeke Knol, Maaike Polspoel, Natalie van Gogh en Christine Majerus gingen eveneens hun kans, maar ook zij werden snel gegrepen. Met nog twee plaatselijke ronden te rijden versnelde Tiffany Cromwell, de grote groep liet echter niet begaan. Hetzelfde overkwam even later Judith Bloem. In de daaropvolgende massasprint was de 25-jarige D'Hoore de snelste van het hele pak en daarmee volgde ze zichzelf op als eindlaureate van deze wedstrijd.
