The course
This year’s Giro Rosa will start in Slovenia and continue on into northern Italy. It will begin in the capital of Ljubljana on the evening of July 3 with a flat, two-kilometre prologue. It is a technical circuit with two 180-degree turns on course.
The racing will continue in Slovenia for stage 1 on July 4 with a 102.2km road race from Kamnik back to Ljubljana. The course is flat and fast with the exception of one seven-kilometre climb located at the halfway point, which could foil the sprinters’ aspirations for a bunch sprint and a chance to take the early leader’s jersey.
The peloton heads into Italy for stage 2’s 121km race from Gaiarine to San Fior in Trevisio. The riders will complete three initial circuits, before heading out on the larger course that includes three climbs followed by a long descent to the finish line.
Stage 3 will take the riders along a relatively flat 127.5km stage from Curtatone to Mantove. There is only one climb on course, in Monzambano, but it might not be enough to separate the field, and at nearly 80km away from the finish line, the sprinters could be treated to their first bunch kick.
Stage 4 will likely offer another chance for the sprinters to shine with a 103km flat stage from Pioltello to Pozzo d’Adda near Milan.
The climbers will be treated to their first uphill finish during stage 5. The 128.4km race will start in Trezzo Sull’Adda and finish on the long ascent to Aprica. The climb is not too steep and a small group is expected to arrive together.
The field will be tested once again on stage 6 with three categorized climbs ranging from six to seven kilometres each during the 102.5km race from Tresivio to Morbegno. The final climb is located within 20km from the finish line and could be an opportunity for gaps to form in the GC.
Stage 7 will start in the seaside town of Arenzano and contest the nine-kilometre climb over Naso di Gatto followed by the climb over Rialto before plummeting to the finish line in Loano. The stage is only 89.7km but it will surely shake up the overall classification.
Stage 8 will offer a day for the time triallists with a 21.7km parcours from Pisano to Nebbiuno. The time trial will be predominantly downhill during the first half and a gentle grade uphill on the last half.
The finale stage 9 at the Giro Rosa, 92.7km beginning in Verbania, is not a celebratory stage. It will be one of the hardest stages of the 10 days, particularly on the 13km finishing climb to San Domenico di Varzo. The climb was used on two previous occasions where both Abbott (2013) and Emma Pooley (2014) won solo. The climb is almost certain to decide the overall winner of the 2015 Giro Rosa.

The Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile is set to host the best racers in the world at one of the biggest stage races for women, 10 days of tough racing from July 3 to 13 between the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and San Domenico di Varzo in northern Italy.
Rabo-Liv’s domination of last year’s race, of which they secured the top three overall places, may be dampened this time around with out the outright leadership of defending champion Marianne Vos, who has given up on her season’s targets in order to properly recover from a lingering hamstring injury.
The Dutch team will field current world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, who was runner-up last year behind Vos, however she too has battled with an injury to her leg since May and is only just returning to peloton. She recently won the French Road Championship, however; a sign that her fitness is good heading into the Giro Rosa.
Anna van der Breggen, who was third last year, is also back and in top form having just won the Dutch time trial title over the weekend. She’s had a strong season so far having placed third in the road race at the European Games, podium in a stage at the Euskal Emakumeen Bira, won the overall title at Elsy Jacobs, won two stages at the Energiewacht Tour and won the World Cup at Flèche Wallonne.
The team will once again include Katarsyna Niewiadoma, who was 13th overall last year, but has proven herself to be a top contender after recently winning the overall title at the Euskal Emakumeen Bira.
Rabo-Liv lost its powerhouse performer Annemiek van Vleuten to Bigla Pro Cycling, and after winning two stages during last year’s edition, she is sure to shine again. Bigla will also field South African champion Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, Swiss time trial champion Doris Schweizer and Canadian road champion Joëlle Numainville along with their new signing Carmen Small.
“We want to do a good Giro overall,” said Thomas Campana, the team’s manager. “This is another big test for us and we want to honour the race and make it an exciting one. Together with all teams, we want to put on a great show of women's cycling for the partners and supporters of the sport. We've chosen a diverse line-up. It will be curious to see how we do it the time trials but overall we will look to do well with a balanced team.”
Two-time overall winner Mara Abbott, who placed fourth last year, will take the start line with a strong Wiggle-Honda squad. She will have the backing of Elisa Longo Borghini, who was fifth overall last year, and the team will field sprinters Giorgia Bronzini, a six-time stage winner, and Julien D’hoore.
“I am so excited for it to be Giro time again this year,” Abbott said. “This race is special because it is now our only stage race with truly big mountains, but the atmosphere and excitement of the race make it even more special. Taking part in this race has a magic of participating in something extraordinary that I haven't seen at any other competition.
“I am so proud to be on such a strong team as well,” Abbott added. “I am honoured to get to be on the roster with these girls. I can't wait!”
Alena Amialiusik, overall winner of the Garcia Orlova, will lead the Velocio-SRAM squad for a top overall placing. She recently won the road race at the European Games in Baku along with the Belarus national titles in the road race and the time trial.
"Our team is racing strong at the moment, with winning the Aviva Women's Tour of Britain and now so many great rides at the national championships. I think we have a lot of cards to play for the Giro Rosa and it will be an exciting stage race. I have seen the stages and it looks very open this year. With the individual time trial being so late in the race, it also has the opportunity to change the overall classification a lot. I think we can expect a very exciting race!"
Katrin Garfoot will be one to watch for a top place in the overall and she has the backing of the Orica-AIS squad, however, director Gene Bates noted that the team’s main target is to gain experience. “The first goal is to gain experience in a stage race such as the Giro. For the women, it’s the biggest race of the year and there is a lot of hype with that.”
Liv-Plantur duo Claudia Lichtenberg, a former winner of the Giro Rosa, and Sabrina Stultiens will be a pair to watch for on the climbs.
Recent British national road champion Lizzie Armitstead will debut her new jersey at the 10-day race with aspirations of bringing her Boels-Dolmans team success in the selective stages and sprints. Her teammates will include Evelyn Stevens and Megan Guarnier, who will focus on the GC, Chantal Blaak, Ellen van Dijk, Romy Kasper, Kasia Pawlowska and Demi de Jong.
“Megan and Evelyn are the riders we count on in the general classification. It will be a tough Giro Rosa with the hardest part at the end of the race. Megan got seventh last year and I think she can do better this year. We will have a stronger team with Evelyn Stevens on her side. We aim for the podium of the general classification, but that doesn’t mean there will be no chances for our other riders to try to win a stage. I think every rider in our team is capable of that.”

Annemiek van Vleuten (Bigla) time trialled to victory on the opening stage prologue of the 26th edition of the Giro Rosa. Having won the Giro Rosa prologue last year and the Euskal Emakumeen Bira prologue last month, van Vleuten, known for her prowess in the short individual efforts, started the stage as the outright favourite.Covering the two-kilometre course in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Friday in a time of 2:49.64, van Vleuten beat out Rabo Liv pair Lucinda Brand and Roxanne Knetemann. With van Vleuten’s prologue win comes the maglia rosa, the coveted pink jersey awarded the overall race leader.“I’m very happy I was able to win this for my team,” van Vleuten told Ella afterward. “Everything went well today.”Going into it [as a race favourite], van Vleuten said she did feel the pressure.
“You know that you’re in good form and you know you can win so you feel this pressure to perform and actually do it. You don’t get many chances to take the pink jersey, and so you cannot make any mistakes. De 25-jarige Barbara Guarischi (Velocio-Sram) heeft de eerste rit in lijn van de Giro Rosa, met start in Kamnik en aankomst na 102,5 kilometer te Ljubljana, gewonnen. Onze landgenote Jolien D'hoore werd 42e. De Nederlandse Lucinda Brand (Rabobank-Liv) is de nieuwe leidster in deze wielerronde. Barbara Guarischi haalde de ritzege binnen na een massasprint. Daarin was ze net iets sneller dan de Nederlandse Lucinda Brand en haar Australische teamgenote Tiffany Cromwell. Dankzij de bonificatieseconden neemt de Nederlandse Brand de roze leiderstrui over van haar landgenote Annemiek van Vleuten, die vrijdag de proloog op haar naam schreef. Morgen trekken de rensters van Gaiarine naar San Fior voor een etappe van 121,5 kilometer. Daarin zitten drie hellingen, waarvan de laatste ligt op zestien kilometer van de finish.

Storybook season continues for Megan Guarnier with Giro Rosa stage two win and maglia rosa
Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) won stage two of the Giro Rosa from an elite group of eight riders that took shape over the climbs and descents that punctuated the second half of the stage. The American played off a late race attack by teammate Evie Stevens- employing a similar strategy to the one the pair used to net Guarnier her second national road title last May. With the stage win, Guarnier moved into the race lead, pulling on the iconic maglia rosa.“Today was quite special,” Guarnier told Ella CyclingTips. “This was the same stage last year – minus the really long climb – where I had an asthma attack that took me out of the GC running. It was a nice day to win for the team, and my teammates were so proud. It is especially nice to win when they work so hard for you all day as well.”It’s been a huge year for the quietly consistent Guarnier who seems to have found her confidence and footing at Boels-Dolmans in her second season with the Dutch-registered squad. Guarnier wrote her name in the history books in March when she won the inaugural Strade Bianche. The following month she climbed onto her first World Cup podium, finishing in third place at Fléche Wallonne. She snagged her second national road title in May and won the hilly stage one at Euskal Emakumeen Bira in June. The 30-year-old’s fourth victory of the year is her Boels-Dolman’s team 21st win of the season.“Every race Boels comes to, we look to how we can win,” Guarnier said. “I am not keeping a tally, but I know some people are. We have so many strong points and diversity in our team that we really can play to each individual’s strengths.”Anna van der Breggen (Rabo Liv), who has been tipped by many as the pre-race favourite overall, edged out Ashleigh Moolman-Paiso (Bigla) for second place on the stage.Despite the heat in northern Italy, with temperature creeping into the mid-thirites as racing got underway in Gaiarine, the women’s peloton set off at a quick clip from the start- covering 41 kilometres in the opening hour. The stage could be divided into two distinct parts with the first three intermediate sprints all in the first part of the race and the three categorised climbs in the second.With bonus seconds up on offer, each of the three intermediate sprints were hotly contested. Overnight race leader Lucinda Brand (Rabo Liv) pocketed seven seconds out on the road, winning two of the intermediate sprints and finishing second in the third.When the road rose, Flávia Oliveira (Alé Cipollini) and Carlee Taylor (Lotto Soudal Ladies) slipped away from the bunch. The peloton split over the Pietro San di Feletto, the first of three climbs on the menu.The leading pair stretched out their gap to 1:51 before the start of the second climb –at which point the peloton shattered and the first elite selection was made. Guarnier, Moolman and van der Breggen had made the cut alongside Wiggle Honda teammates Mara Abbott and Elisa Longo Borghini, Rabo Liv teammates Kasia Niewiadoma and Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Sabrina Stultiens (Liv Plantur).“On the second GPM climb, Van der Breggen attacked,” noted Guarnier. “That is where the first selection happened with only a few riders cresting the top of that climb together.”Taylor crashed out the of the race lead, leaving Oliveira alone out front. Slightly further behind, the descent between the second and third climbs caused a reshuffle amongst the elite chasers.
“I went away on the first QOM,” Taylor told Ella CyclingTips. “I caught Flavia over the top, and then on the next QOM, I got a gap over the top. I felt strong, so I kept going. I got into a corner that just came back on itself, and I overshot it, catapulting over the guardrail and down the cliff.”“My bike broke when I hit the rail,” Taylor added. “I slid down the other side through the trees and had to pull myself up and through the wire fencing. Because Flavia and I only had 50 seconds over the top, the team car had gone out of the gap, so I had to wait a really long time. It wasn’t exactly how I imagined my day.“I was pretty sore for the rest of the race,” Taylor added. “I feel heaps better now that I have the wounds treated. My arm just got sliced by the railing or a tree, and I have some large lumps and random cuts. The good thing is no road rash- got to find the positives wherever I can.”It seems that Taylor wasn’t the only rider to crash on Sunday. Following the stage, Audrey Cordon (Wiggle Honda) posted the tweets below, announcing that both she and teammate Anna Sanchis are out with collarbone breaks. The loss of Cordon and Sanchis will be a huge blow for Longo Borghini and Abbott’s general classification ambitions.
Twenty kilometres from the finish, nine riders led the race: Guarnier and Stevens, Niewiadoma and van der Breggen, Longo Borghini and Abbott, Moolman and Karol Ann Canual (Velocio-SRAM).“On the descent between the climbs the group got a little bigger and then the teams were represented with more riders,” Guarnier explained. “After that Rabo kept the pace high on the final climb. The climbs today were longer than expected and sometimes mid-GPM climb, there were descents which kept things fast as well.”Oliveira was dropped on the final categorised climb as Rabo-Liv drove the pace. With the final kilometre looming, Stevens launched an attack.“Evie attacked with one kilometre to go, and the other teams were immediately on her,” said Guarnier, as is shown in the short clip below. “Then as the sprint was setting up she attacked into the final corner and strung things out. As the sprint opened up, I followed until I felt ready to drive to the line.”
“It was a bit of plan and a bit of instinct,” Guarnier noted. “We felt the race. And we raced accordingly.”Three stages into the Giro Rosa, and the maglia rosa has changed hands following every stage. Guarnier takes the pink jersey from Lucinda Brand (Rabo Liv), who finished in the second group, 1:47 behind the stage winner. Van der Breggen jumps up to second overall, two seconds behind Guarnier, while Moolman is third overall at five seconds.The Giro Rosa continues on Monday with a fairly flat stage. The sprinters should have a chance to showcase their top turn of speed into Mantova.

Lucinda gaat vol voor etappe en wint
De Giro van dit jaar verloopt tot nu toe voor Lucinda als in een droom. Na twee tweede plaatsen en een dag in het roze boekte ze maandag zelfs een ritzege. Ze was de snelste van een kopgroep van negen rensters. Lucinda kwam maar 12 tellen te kort voor herovering van de roze trui. Ze versterkte wel de leiding in de puntentrui.Ze droomde even van herovering van het roze, maar uiteindelijk ging Lucinda in de derde etappe vol voor dagwinst. En met succes. Het was de derde keer in vier etappes, dat ze in de top drie eindigde. Na twee tweede plaatsen was het nu dus echt raak. “Een dag rond rijden in de roze trui en nu nog eens een etappe winnen ook. Mijn Giro kan bijna niet meer stuk”, juichte ze uitbundig na de huldiging.Het was snikheet. Tot 40 graden. Hoe ben je daar doorheen gekomen?“Een bakoven. Maar ik kan daar wel redelijk goed tegen. Je moet gedisciplineerd eten en vooral drinken. Het is fijn om af en toe ter verkoeling een bidon over je uit te gooien en het was ook niet onprettig dat er wel wat wind stond. Maar het belangrijkste is dat je voldoende drinkt. Dat heeft weer als gevaar, dat je maag vol zit en je dus geen honger hebt. Dus de discipline opbrengen om toch met regelmaat wat te eten, want anders ga je het op zo’n dag echt niet redden.”Je zat als beste geklasseerde renster in een kopgroep van negen met op een gegeven moment een voorsprong van vijf minuten. Waar denk je dan aan?“Toen het gat zo groot was, had ik er wel even het idee, dat ik de roze trui weer ging terugpakken. Maar ik dacht ook aan het ploegbelang. Claudia Haussler zat ook in de kopgroep. Anna van der Breggen is voor de ronde onze kopvrouw. Maar Haussler kan een gevaarlijke klant worden. Die wil je niet meenemen naar een hele grote voorsprong. Dat is het eigenlijk niet waard.”Maar in de finale kon het nog altijd. Je was tien kilometer voor de finish met een gat van twee minuten nog viruteel leider. Wat toen?“Ik had tot dat moment nog niet veel gedaan. Het was niet aan mij om vol op kop te rijden. Maar bij twee minuten ben ik toch gaan meedraaien. Het gevaar Haussler was toen niet zo groot meer en ik wilde de vaart erin houden. Maar niet voor het roze, want ik dacht alleen nog aan die etappe. Met deze groep aankomen, bood mij de beste kansen. Al waren er nog twee hele snelle rensters in de groep. Het zou geen een-twee-drietje worden.”Je blijft twee snelle Italiaanse vrouwen voor in de sprint. Hoe is die sprint verlopen?“De laatste kilometers waren heel hectisch. Op 5 kilometer probeerde iemand het. Die ben ik gaan terughalen. Op anderhalve kilometer was er weer een aanval. Toen heb ik even gegokt. Ik had al gereageerd en vond dat het dit keer niet aan mij was. Ze gingen mij wel aan zitten kijken, maar uiteindelijk reageerde toch iemand. Maar dat schoot niet echt op. Daarna besloot ik toch te versnellen met de hele sliert achter me aan. Ik kwam als tweede uit de laatste bocht. Dat was gunstig. Scandolara ging op 300 meter aan. Daar heb ik op gereageerd en ik trok meteen door. Niet heel vol, want ik wilde nog wat bewaren voor Cexchini, maar die kwam niet meer. Gelukkig.”

Italiaans podium in Giro Rosa: Cucinotta op hoogste trapje
De vierde etappe van de Giro Rosa is een Italiaans feestje geworden. In de straten van Pozzo d'Adda won Annalisa Cucinotta de sprint van het peloton. De Italiaanse liet haar landgenotes Marta Bastianelli en Elena Cecchini net achter zich. De Amerikaanse Megan Guarnier gaat ook na de vierde etappe aan kop in het algemeen klassement, met twee seconden voorsprong op de Nederlandse Anna van der Breggen. Na 30 kilometer koers vormde zich een kopgroep met de Duitse Mieke Kröger, de Australische Lizzie Williams en de twee Italiaanse rensters Valentina Bastianelli en Silvia Valsecchi. Zij werden in volle finale gegrepen en ondanks enkele pogingen slaagde niemand er nog in een massasprint te ontlopen. Daarin toonde Cucinotta zich de sterkste. Belgisch kampioene Jolien D'hoore werd 54e en daarmee beste landgenote. Morgen rijden de rensters van Trezzo Sull'Adda naar Aprica met aankomst bergop na 128,4 kilometer.

World champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot solos to victory in first Giro Rosa summit finish
World champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Rabo Liv) soloed to victory atop Aprica on stage five of the Giro Rosa. Three kilometres from the top of the first summit finish of the 26th edition of the Italian Grand Tour, Ferrand-Prevot made her race winning move, following an attack from Francesa Cauz (Alé Cipollini. Cruz was unable to match Ferrand-Prevot’s pace and was swallowed up by the reduced peloton before the line. Ferrand-Prevot narrowly managed to hold off the chasers.
One second later, race leader Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) beat out Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) in a rare mountaintop field sprint. Pocketing an extra six seconds for second place, Guarnier gains a few precious seconds for the overall classification. The American now has five seconds on Anna van der Breggen and 12 seconds on Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Bigla). Tomorrow, Guarnier will wear the maglia rosa for the fourth straight stage.
“With Pauline two minutes down [on general classification], I wasn’t worried when she went up the road in the final kilometres,” said Guarnier. “The bunch was still rolling. When we got close to the line, I just went for it. It was a nice finish, and, of course, gaining a few seconds always helps.”
The peloton set off from Trezzo sull’Adda in slightly cooler temperatures than previous days – a welcome relief from the heat that served as a real obstacle during earlier stages. A crash disrupted proceedings during the neutral parade, and the official race start was delayed as a result. Italian national road champion and yesterday’s podium finisher, Elena Cecchini, was amongst the reported injured.
The attacks began from as soon as the proper start was give, yet it took nearly an hour for the first successful breakaway to take shape. Orica-AIS was on the attack again today and it was the Australian-registered squad’s Sarah Roy who managed to slip away at kilometre 40. The move, however, was short-lived.
The peloton was together when they hit the only intermediate sprint of the day. Claudia Cretti (Inpa Sottoli Giusfredi) edged out Silvia Valsecchi (BePink Laclassica) to the line. Guarnier sprinted across for third – and scored one additional bonus second.
“The racing was much more aggressive for the first 70 kilometre than I personally had anticipated,” said Guarnier. “It was constant attacks. I could see that Boels-Dolmans was well represented at the front and in the breakaways. My role was to wait for the final climb and see what would happen from there.”
With the lower slopes of the climb fast approaching, a group of 10 riders went clear. The breakaway swelled to nearly 20 riders as the road rose toward the Aprica ski resort. Twenty-five kilometres from the finish, the leaders were 1:44 in advance of the peloton.
“My team was well represented with [Kasia Pawlowska] and Chantal [Blaak], in that 17-rider breakaway,” noted Guarnier. “We did not worry about the move at all; however, Lizzie [Armitstead] and Romy [Kasper] did a great job setting a high tempo to keep the bunch rolling.”
With the peloton closing in on the leaders, Tetyana Riabchenko (Inpa Sottoli Giusfredi) attacked the escape group and immediately gained a gap. Armitstead and Kasper’s efforts steadily saw the peloton make gains, first on the large group and then on Riabchenko.
Eight kilometres from the finish, Riacbchenko had returned to the bunch. Claudia Lichtenberg (Liv Plantur) countered the catch. The reduced peloton immediately responded.
“When we reached the breakaway, Lizzie [Armitstead] continued to drive the pace,” noted Guarnier. “My team rode a super strong race. I’m proud of each and every one of them.”
A number of riders – including Australia’s Kat Garfoot (Orica-AIS) – would attempt to escape on the upper slopes of the summit finish, but only Ferrand-Prevot would prove successful in opening an advantage with staying power.
The Giro Rosa continues on Thursday with a short, sharp stage between Tresivio and Morbegno. Three categorised climbs and several additional uncategorized ramps over the 102km day will provide a real test for the overall contenders.
